Leadership Academies

Intent: The purpose of the Leadership Academies is to give school leaders the foundational knowledge necessary to lead systemic change specific to implementation of the Common Core standards and the South Dakota standards for teaching (i.e., Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching) in their schools and districts.

• Ensure that school leaders have a broad knowledge of the Common Core standards and corresponding instructional practices, as well as a familiarity with curricular materials and resources and appropriate assessment

• Ensure that school leaders have a deep and thorough understanding of the South Dakota standards for teaching.

Target: School leaders, including superintendents and principals

Description of Training

The Leadership Academies consist of several interwoven pieces designed to build knowledge and enhance skills. Initial focus will be on the Common Core standards and the fundamentals of the South Dakota standards for teaching. Superintendents and principals will receive a $125/day stipend for up to four days of training.

1) Common Core Kickoff to SY 2012-13
• One-day event in October featuring national Common Core experts
• Focused on four pillars: Communications, Professional Development, Instructional Materials and Assessment

2) Common Core: ELA course
• Offered online through University of South Dakota
• Course title: EDAD 792: English Language Arts Common Core State Standards for Administrators
• Offered 1st semester of 2012-13; repeated 2nd semester of 2012-13 (if necessary)
• 1 graduate credit

This online course will provide school administrators with the foundational knowledge necessary to lead systemic change in their schools. Participants will have a broad overview of the Common Core standards in English/Language Arts and the impact they will have on students, teachers and learning, including grade-level shifts. The course will highlight the complexity of the new standards and resulting requirement for higher-order thinking skills.

Superintendents, assistant superintendents, principals and assistant principals who are employed by a public school district in one of those roles and who successfully complete this course are eligible for the $125 stipend.

3) Common Core: Math course
• Offered online through University of South Dakota
• Course title: EDAD 792: Math Common Core State Standards for Administrators
• Offered 1st semester of 2012-13; repeated 2nd semester of 2012-13 (if necessary)
• 1 graduate credit

4) South Dakota Standards for Teaching
• Training for this piece currently being re-evaluated

Calendar

The Leadership Academies activities will begin in the fall of 2012 and continue throughout the school year and into the summer.
