COMMON CORE TRAINING FOR TEACHERS

Intent: Foster the formation of professional learning communities through which participants will work towards the goal of implementing the Common Core standards within a learning environment rich in collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking.

Target: Designed especially for elementary teachers, special education teachers, and middle and high school English language arts and math teachers

Goal: Train approximately 8,000 elementary, special education, and middle and high school English language arts and math teachers

Descriptions of Training Modules
• There are six modules related to Common Core training
• Modules 1-2: Designed for those who did not participate in SY 2012-13 training
• Modules 3-6: Target those who are further along in implementation process




MULTIPLE OPTIONS AVAILABLE FOR DISTRICTS

1) Summer Workshops
• Spread over two years: Summers of 2012 and 2013
• Regional locations: Aberdeen, Chamberlain, Pierre (NEW), Rapid City, Sioux Falls
• Participating teachers receive $125/day stipend
• Same content as school year workshops

Five days TOTAL for middle and high school teachers
2012: Module 3 (ELA or Math) & Module 4
2013: Module 5 & Module 6

Six days TOTAL for elementary teachers
2012: Module 3 (ELA and Math) & Module 4
2013: Module 5 & Module 6


For those who have not participated in SY 2011-12 Common Core training, the following is recommended:
Module 1: 8 Standards of Mathematical Practice
Module 2: Common Core 101
• Both offered Summer 2012
• Participating teachers receive $125 per day stipend


2) School Year Workshops
• Spread over 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years (includes summer dates)
• Regional locations: Aberdeen, Chamberlain, Mitchell, Mobridge, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Watertown, Yankton
• Districts receive reimbursement for substitute teachers, except for summer dates
• Same content as summer workshops
• Teachers receive $125 stipend for summer dates

Five days TOTAL for middle and high school teachers
2012: Module 3 (ELA or Math) & Module 4
2013: Module 5 & Module 6

Six days TOTAL for elementary teachers
2012: Module 3 (ELA and Math) & Module 4
2013: Module 5 & Module 6


3) Online Professional Learning
• Starting January 2013
• Registration is now closed
• Framework to develop and infuse higher order instructional practices into curriculum plan
• Gain knowledge of formative, interim and summative assessment
• Participants receive $625 stipend for complete experience
• Those who choose online option cannot receive stipend for in-person trainings (state- or district-sponsored)


4) District-created PD Plan
• Districts must submit application
Applications (Due May 1, 2012)
• For teachers to receive stipends, PD must be scheduled during non-contracted days/times




DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING MODULES

Module One: (repeat of Jan. 2012 workshop) This “101” session is a one-day workshop designed to aid in the understanding and the concepts behind the Eight Standards for Mathematical Practice, or 8SMP. The 8SMP are a key part in the delivery of the increased cognitive demand of the Common Core State Standards. This workshop will provide teachers with background information and an in-depth understanding of the 8SMP. (Danielson Framework: Domain 3)
Recommended for teachers who have not participated in Common Core training held during 2011-12 school year.


Module Two: (repeat of workshop held fall & winter 2011-13) Common Core 101 will be a hybrid of online work and a two-day workshop. The workshop will focus on review and understanding Common Core KUD’s and Webb Leveling. Participants will engage in a process to analyze lessons to ensure alignment to the disaggregated CCSS (KUD) and meet the cognitive demand of the CCSS (Webb Leveling.) Participants will also discuss the relationship of formative and summative assessments and evaluate the purposes and uses of assessment. (Danielson Framework: Domain 1)
Recommended for teachers who have not participated in Common Core training held during 2011-12 school year.


Module Three for Math: This module will be focused on implementing the 8SMP. The 8SMP 201 module will branch off the defining and understanding delivered during 8SMP 101. The module will focus on designing lessons and using lessons that reach the 8SMPs. Participants will be exposed to model lesson examples that help foster the 8SMP. Participants will also have time to collaborate and analyze materials used in their classrooms for infusion of 8SMPs. Participants will walk away with skills to better incorporate 8SMP as well as enhanced lessons that foster the 8SMP. (Danielson Framework: Domain 3)

Module Three for English Language Arts: This ELA module will be focused on implementing the ELA CCSS for Informational Text through examining strategies that focus on finding balance between informational and literary texts in the ELA classroom. With strong emphasis on college and career readiness, students are expected to perform tasks linked to the texts they read with high levels of cognitive ability. This emphasis on preparing students for college and career includes a significant focus on critical thinking skills and informational text. Module 4 participants will learn strategies for finding the necessary balance between literary and informational that incorporate critical thinking through writing processes. (Danielson Framework: Domain 3)

Module Four: The focus of the module is to learn about the year-long instructional road map to implement Common Core State Standards that a Curriculum Curation Team developed in July. Participants will also navigate and analyze the curated resources that accompany the road map. Participants will walk away with a tool and process to develop more resources aligned to Common Core. (Danielson Framework: Domain 1 and 3)

Module Five: In this two-day module, participants will learn strategies to infuse higher order instructional practices and help students extend and apply knowledge. Infusing higher order thinking strategies increases the chances students will make connections to the schema when they encounter new information and be able to make sense of that information. (Danielson Framework: Domain 3)

Module Six: The one-day module will help participants assess the higher order thinking emphasized in Common Core standards. Participants will also gain knowledge of benefits and how to implement a quality, well-balanced plan for utilizing formative, interim and summative assessment. (Danielson Framework: Domain 1 and 3)
