SD Assessment & Data Literacy Initiative

The South Dakota Department of Education is recruiting regional coaches, school/district practitioners, and university/teacher preparation faculty to participate in a Classroom Assessment and Data Literacy initiative. The goal of the initiative is to cultivate assessment and data literacy among South Dakota educators, school/district leaders, and pre-service teachers in order to improve student learning. This will be accomplished through a series of training meetings, professional learning modules, independent practice/application activities, follow-up discussions/coaching, and strategic planning for scaling/sustaining the work within schools and districts over time. The 2022-23 SY is structured as follows: virtual 2-hour kickoff meeting in September followed by five whole group meetings spaced throughout the school year. The first and last whole group meeting will be full day meetings in-person. The other three whole group meetings will be virtual, 3-hour meetings.

Participants can earn 4 college credits (if desired), utilize sub pay, and receive reimbursement for travel expenses incurred (mileage, meals per diem, and hotel). Participants are expected to fully engage and participate in the following activities over the course of the 2022-23 SY.

  • Attend all meetings and coaching/office hour sessions (all times are Central Time).
    • Kickoff meeting (virtual): Sept. 8, 2022: 12-3 p.m. CT
    • Meeting 1 (in person; Rapid City; travel reimbursed): Oct. 17, 2022: 9a.m.-4p.m. CT
    • Meeting 2 (virtual): Dec. 8, 2022: 12-3 p.m. CT
    • Meeting 3 (virtual): Jan. 19, 2023: 12-3 p.m. CT
    • Meeting 4 (virtual): March 9, 2023: 12-3 p.m. CT
    • Meeting 5 (in person; Sioux Falls; travel reimbursed): June 7, 2023: 9a.m.-4p.m. CT
  • Watch pre-recorded learning modules (~1 hour in length) prior to whole-group meetings and complete reflection questions/independent activities at the end of each learning module.
  • Facilitate regular professional learning groups with educators (e.g. 1-hour weekly PLCs). These professional learning groups will be selected by participants and could include in-service teachers, school/district leaders, pre-service teachers, or other relevant groups. All materials and training on how to select and facilitate professional learning meetings will be provided as part of the initiative.

Interested participants should complete this survey before Aug. 31, 2022. Please email Matthew Gill with questions.
