Schools awarded mini-grants to promote healthy eating

Nine South Dakota organizations were awarded mini-grants to challenge youngsters to eat more vegetables and be more physically active. The $500 mini-grants are administered by the South Dakota Department of Education’s Child and Adult Nutrition Services.

Grant recipients were required to participate in a competitive application process. The following entities were awarded mini-grants to design their challenge and celebrate their success.

• Coleman-Egan School District
• Eureka Public School
• Enemy Swim Day School
• Big Stone City Elementary
• Dell Rapids Public School
• Rainbow Day Care
• Volunteers of America, Dakotas
• West Central High School
• Wolf Creek Elementary School

Some have partnered with other community agencies such as a local bank, the city municipal league or local retailers for help with the challenge. Other communities plan on using local master gardeners to help them grow vegetables and track their consumption.
