Governor delivers state budget address
Gov. Kristi Noem delivered her budget address to state lawmakers on Dec. 3. The budget accounts for enrollment increases, but no inflationary increases. Learn more in the Governor’s Budget Report for Fiscal Year 2021. The 2020 Legislature will convene Jan. 14, 2020.

Appropriations Committee approves SFAB recommendations
The Department of Education presented the Report on School Finance Accountability Board Meeting to the Joint Committee on Appropriations at the committee’s Dec. 2 meeting. Meeting audio will be available on the committee’s webpage. The committee approved the SFAB’s recommendations.

South Dakota LEADS conference Dec. 9
Gov. Kristi Noem has announced the launch of the South Dakota LEADS Conference, to be held Monday, Dec. 9, at the Convention Center in Sioux Falls. The one-day event is comprised of three tracks for students, teachers, and women. The event is free.

Common Course Code changes approved for 2020-21 school year
The South Dakota Department of Education reviews and updates the Common Course Codes on an annual basis. Several changes to the Common Course Numbering System have been approved for the 2020-21 school year. The new codes will be added to the PRF system when the PRF system reopens for the 2020-21 school year.

English Reminder: Free PD available to build educator capacity to work with English learners
The South Dakota Department of Education has partnered with WIDA Professional Learning to offer educators access to six, self-paced, on-demand eWorkshops. These free workshops are available to educators throughout the 2019-20 school year and are appropriate for all teachers and administrators, not only teachers currently working with English learners.

SD State Library 2019 School Library Data Digest available
The 2019 School Library Data Digest is now available, with information about services, electronic resources, digital access, circulation, programming, and more at school libraries across South Dakota. The School Library Data Digest is a compilation of data gathered via the annual school library survey distributed by the State Library to school districts every spring.
Watch Video SFEC offers training, services, and resources to SD public schools

The South Dakota Statewide Family Engagement Center is a grant program that can offer free trainings, services, and resources to South Dakota public schools. The SFEC strives to ensure that all learners—especially English learners, economically disadvantaged learners, and minority students—have the supports they need to achieve academic, career, and life goals.

SDStepAhead.com is a website dedicated to kids, built around the South Dakota Early Learning Guidelines. Organized by learning domains, this site also includes resources to improve knowledge of child development and a map of services by South Dakota county. An updated informational brochure promoting this website and Head Start services in South Dakota is now available.

Bus Apply by Dec. 13 for Clean Diesel grants

The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources is accepting applications for funding under the South Dakota Clean Diesel Grant Program. The program provides rebates to assist in purchasing new buses to replace old, high-emitting diesel buses.

SD Capitol Security tightening at Capitol

Students and educators visiting the Capitol in Pierre during the legislative session will notice some changes. A security screening room is being constructed at the north entrance. Once completed, Capitol visitors will enter through the north doors and be directed into the screening room. Signage will help direct visitors and inform them what items are not allowed in the Capitol. Construction is expected to be completed before the start of the 2020 legislative session.
