Dr. Ben Jones Dr. Ben Jones to lead Department of Education
Dr. Ben Jones joins Gov. Kristi Noem’s administration as Interim Secretary of Education. In his previous role as Dean of Dakota State University’s College of Arts and Sciences, he oversaw more than 50 full-time and adjunct faculty members. In that role, he revitalized numerous programs to better equip students for modernized careers, launched innovative programming and improved course content through interdepartmental collaboration.

The 2019 Legislative Session begins Jan. 8, with Gov. Kristi Noem’s State of the State address at 1 p.m. CST. Listen live at sd.net. House and Senate Education Committee meetings will also be streamed live throughout session via sd.net and on the SDNet app available for iOS and Android.

board meeting Board of Education Standards to meet Jan. 28 in Pierre
The state Board of Education Standards has set its tentative agenda for 2019. The first meeting is slated for Jan. 28 at the MacKay Building in Pierre. Public hearings on proposed revisions to World Language and School Library standards are on the agenda, along with a public hearing to consider removing state approval for course equivalency.

Applications for Homeland Security grant funding are being accepted until Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. CST. State and local, public and private nonprofit agencies, including public and non-public schools, are eligible to apply.

Nominate your District Teacher of the Year by March 1
Each South Dakota school district that wishes to participate in the South Dakota Teacher of the Year program needs to submit the name of its District Teacher of the Year to Sherry Dickerson, with the South Dakota Department of Education, by March 1.

math games Encourage math teachers to participate in virtual coaching
DOE’s Virtual Math Coaching program is launching a Winter 2019-Spring 2020 coaching cohort in January. With this cohort, the program will be expanded to include K-12 coaches and teachers. The program is an opportunity for math educators to have rich discussions about lesson planning and best practices in math instruction, in addition to giving each other specific, personalized feedback.

21CCLC Logo Submit Notice of Intent to Apply for 21st CCLC grant funding by Jan. 18

Schools and other organizations interested in 21st Century Community Learning Centers, or 21st CCLC, grants must submit a Notice of Intent to Apply by Jan. 18. The learning centers are intended to assist students from high-poverty and low-performing schools by providing academic enrichment opportunities and activities designed to complement regular school instruction.

CPR Annual reminder: CPR and AED training resources on DOE website
CPR is not a graduation requirement; however, all districts need to incorporate into district curriculum the skills necessary to perform hands-only CPR and awareness in the use of an AED (automated external defibrillator). The South Dakota Department of Education must annually make school districts aware of available resources for use in providing this instruction, which can be found on the department’s CPR Resources for Schools webpage.

The South Dakota Department of Health’s Tobacco Control Program recently created resources to assist schools and communities with addressing the growing problem of youth e-cigarette use in South Dakota. Find them on DOH's Tobacco Prevention and Control Program webpage, under the Resources heading.

Reminder from State Fire Marshal about school construction requirements

The State Fire Marshal’s Office would like to remind school districts that the construction, renovation or remodeling of school buildings is subject to ARSD Chapter 61:15:02 – School Construction Requirements. All plans and specifications must be submitted to the State Fire Marshal’s office for review and approval prior to the start of construction.
