With the end of the school year approaching, it’s time to share information and deadlines for closing out your 2018-19 data and the publishing of the 2018-19 Report Card.
  • The last date to submit your data is Friday, June 14
  • NEW this year: Only ONE opportunity to appeal Report Card data

supplies Public hearing May 20 on proposed changes to educator preparation program approval
The Board of Education Standards will hold a public hearing regarding proposed changes to South Dakota Administrative Rule 24:53, which has to do with approval of educator preparation programs. The changes update language to reflect industry standards, correct references to national program standards where applicable, and align terminology and requirements with updated educator certification rules. Go to https://rules.sd.gov and follow the “Department of Education” link, then “Article 24:53.”

School security funds available
The U.S. Department of Justice, School Violence Prevention Program, is accepting applications now through May 31 for school security projects. Public agencies such as school districts are eligible to apply. The grant announcement is available here: https://cops.usdoj.gov/svpp. Schools apply directly to US DOJ.

2019 SD Workforce Education Grant recipients announced
Eight South Dakota Workforce Education Grants, totaling more than $1,091,000, have been awarded to seven South Dakota public school districts and one private non-profit organization. The purpose of the grant program is to provide the opportunity to make transformative change in career and technical education programs.

Randi Hartman Dakota Prairie Elementary in Brookings earns national recognition
The American School Counselor Association has announced Dakota Prairie Elementary in Brookings as a Recognized ASCA Model Program. The school will be honored at a recognition ceremony at ASCA’s annual conference in Boston in July. Congratulations, Dakota Prairie!

Register for 2019-20 Principal Leadership and Development program
Registration is open for the 2019-20 Principal Leadership and Development Program, sponsored by DOE and School Administrators of South Dakota. This program helps first-year administrators acclimate to their new role. Please encourage your new administrators to jump on board. They will be assigned a mentor and attend four face-to-face meetings and other online opportunities. The cost is $125. Register on the SASD website.
Update Personnel Record Form by June 14
The Personnel Record Form is open. The deadline to make any changes to this school year’s database is June 14. It is important to log into the system via http://doe.sd.gov/prf/. Click on “PRF Log-in Screen,” then select DE69PERS to enter SY 2019 staffing data.

Still time to sign up for mentoring program

The statewide mentoring program provides a first-year teacher access to a mentor teacher for a period of two years. There’s still time for new mentors to apply, and applications for new teachers are due June 15. Late hires will also have an opportunity to participate.

Civil rights regulations training to be offered in June

The South Dakota Department of Education is making available a professional development opportunity that will allow participants to gain in-depth knowledge into civil rights federal regulations for the educational setting. The full-day session will feature specialists from the regional U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights in Kansas City, Mo.

Training to address emergency planning for schools

Multi-Hazard Emergency Planning for Schools will be held June 13-14 in Mitchell. Hosted by the state’s Office of Emergency Management, the course provides participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to refine or develop an all-hazards school Emergency Operations Plan. Participants are encouraged to bring any current plans for their school, as they will be used during class. Learn more on OEM's event registration site.
