Assessment Book Dylan Wiliam to launch two-year formative assessment program in SD
Dylan Wiliam, author of “Embedding Formative Assessment,” will lead a one-day professional development event Dec. 13 in Oacoma. The event will launch a two-year professional development program on formative assessment. Schools are invited to apply for the opportunity to participate in this two-year program.

school bus Apply by Dec. 13 for Clean Diesel grants
The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources is accepting applications for funding under the South Dakota Clean Diesel Grant Program. The program provides rebates to assist in purchasing new buses to replace old, high-emitting diesel buses.

South Dakota NAEP scores hold steady
South Dakota scores on the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), known as the Nation’s Report Card, are mostly steady and remain at or above national scores. Bright spots include state scores in eighth-grade math and fourth-grade reading.

ESSA State Plan Revision Workgroup finishes its work
The ESSA State Plan Revision Workgroup has held its final meeting. The South Dakota Department of Education will now take the group’s recommendations under advisement. Once revisions are made, there will be a public comment window and time for the Governor to review before final revisions are submitted to the U.S. Department of Education via an amendment in 2020.
 
 
 
 
November location added! Trainings on unpacked standards documents
South Dakota adopted English language arts and math content standards in March 2018. The 2018-19 school year was considered a transition year, so that teachers could become familiar with the revisions made to state content standards. Full implementation of new state content standards is now underway. Students will be assessed on the new standards in spring 2020. Model school district policy on suicide prevention available

The American School Counselor Association, National Association of School Psychologists, the Trevor Project, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention have created a model district policy and best practices for school districts to consider when protecting the health and well-being of students through procedures for suicide prevention, intervention, and response.

 
 
 
 
State Library provides valuable resources for school libraries

The South Dakota State Library is a division of the Department of Education. The State Library offers a wide variety of resources to support your school library, administrators, teachers, and students, including school library standards, professional development, and electronic databases.

Encourage teachers to apply for Outstanding Math Teacher Award by Dec. 1

The South Dakota Council of Teachers of Mathematics is pleased to partner with Daktronics for the 11th annual Daktronics Outstanding Mathematics Teacher Award. Encourage your math teachers to apply. The honoree receives a $1,000 cash award and is recognized at the SD STEM Ed Conference in Huron in February.

Nominate outstanding biology teachers

Nominate a great science teacher in your district for the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award. The award is sponsored by the National Association of Biology Teachers and honors teachers of the life sciences in grades 7-12. Nominees will have until March 30 to complete their application for the award.

Encourage students to be pages during 2020 legislative session

The South Dakota Legislature is accepting applications from high school students interested in serving as pages during the 2020 legislative session. Students must be juniors or seniors (seniors are given preference), must be sponsored by a legislator and be in good academic standing (3.0 GPA or higher is encouraged).
