2020 Teacher of the Year Harris selected as 2020 South Dakota Teacher of the Year
Amanda Harris, a fourth-grade teacher at Endeavor Elementary in the Harrisburg School District, has been named the 2020 South Dakota Teacher of the Year. Secretary of Education Ben Jones made the announcement at a banquet at the Cedar Shore Conference Center in Oacoma.

Fruit and Veggies Applications due Nov. 8 for National School Lunch Program equipment grants
Grants are available for schools in need of funding to purchase equipment to serve healthier meals, improve food safety, and expand access. Applications are due Nov. 8. Find more information on the grant application, which is posted on the Department of Education’s School Nutrition Programs webpage, under “Equipment Grants.”


Students receiving proactive admission, college readiness coursework letters in October
In October, eligible public high school seniors are receiving proactive admission and/or college readiness coursework letters from the South Dakota Department of Education. For your reference in answering potential questions from parents and students, you can access sample letters, a Q & A document, and the SD-STARS Report DIG.

Blue Ribbon Six SD schools named National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2019
Across the country, 312 public schools and 50 private schools have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2019. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Honorees will be celebrated with an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 14-15. Congratulations to these South Dakota honorees!

Application now available for state-approved local mentoring program
As of July 1, 2019, ARSD 24:28:11:08 requires all teachers seeking general alternative certification to participate in a state-approved mentoring program. An application and other needed documents for a state-approved local mentoring program are now available on the Department of Education’s State Mentoring program webpage under “State-Approved Local Mentor Program.” Questions? Resources Needs Puzzle Governor proclaims October Dyslexia Awareness Month
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. The Dyslexia Handbook for Teachers and Parents in South Dakota is available to help parents and educators learn more about dyslexia and includes additional resources for teachers to access if they suspect a student may have dyslexia. Visit our Dyslexia webpage for the dyslexia handbook, a brochure, and many other dyslexia resources.
 
 
 
 
Session proposals for 2020 Special Education Conference due Dec. 6
The 2020 Special Education Conference will be held March 17-18, 2020, in Sioux Falls. Session proposals must be received by Dec. 6. See this "Call for Presentations" flyer for suggested topics and more information on guidelines for submitting a proposal.

workplace success DLR offers training to enhance students’ workplace skills

Bring Your “A” Game to Work offers an engaging curriculum designed to foster foundational workplace skills and work ethic. The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation makes the youth version of this training available at no cost to schools. Training is available on a first-come, first-served basis. No Smoking No Vaping DOH provides summary of resources and technical assistance on vaping

The South Dakota Department of Health has compiled a summary of resources and technical assistance for schools on the topic of vaping. If schools have questions, they may contact Kiley Hump with DOH. The summary also provides a link to Regional Tobacco Prevention Coordinators who can provide technical assistance at the local level.
