A team of representatives of the Departments of Health, Education, and Social Services, along with the Board of Regents and Board of Technical Education, are meeting regularly to identify shared COVID-related issues in preparation for the 2020-21 school year. This team will provide information, resources, and technical assistance to assist stakeholders with their decision-making.

Childhood immunizations decreasing
As a result of COVID-19, the Department of Health reports seeing a decrease in childhood immunizations. DOH has sent a letter to principals and school nurses reminding them of SDCL 13-28-7.1, which requires any pupil entering school be adequately immunized against certain communicable diseases. DOH asks school health officials to encourage parents to resume their children’s vaccinations and keep them up to date.

Using SD Interim Assessments to identify knowledge gaps
The South Dakota Department of Education is hosting a summer webinar series exploring the South Dakota Interim Assessments associated with the state tests in English language arts and math. The webinar series is exploring the types of assessments available at no charge, how to access them, and how to use the available data to identify and address knowledge gaps.

Continuing education contact hours available for flex learning transition
DOE is providing districts with a Continuing Education Contact Hours form to account for teachers who moved classes to online formats last spring due to COVID-19. We recognize that the transition from face-to-face to online delivery required learning on the part of many educators. Districts can use this form to provide CE contact hours for educators who were involved in this process. Questions? Contact our Certification Office.

New leaders in place for Board of Regents and special schools
The 2020-21 school year will start with new leaders in place for the South Dakota Board of Regents and the two special schools under its governance: the South Dakota School for the Deaf and the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

COVID-19 won’t stop Statewide Mentoring Program!

If you’re hiring first-year teachers, there’s still time for new teachers and mentors to enroll in the Statewide Mentoring Program. Unlike past years, when registration for summer orientation and kickoff events was handled through GoSignMeUp, this year, these events will be completed virtually, and mentors will receive registration information directly.

2020 Indian Education Conference to be held virtually Aug. 10-19

The 2020 Indian Education Conference will be held virtually this year over a two-week period with four live webinars that include keynote speakers and will be hosted by Whitney Rencountre. Conference participants need to register for the webinars to be held Aug. 10, 12, 17, and 19. The conference will be free to attend.

Farm to School: Seeking food service directors and educators to get involved

South Dakota’s Farm to School network is looking for food service directors and educators to get involved and help grow this valuable program. Farm to School implementation includes one or more of three core elements: local foods procurement, in-class education, and school/youth gardens.

Families set to receive food assistance due to COVID-19

The South Dakota Department of Social Services in collaboration with the Department of Education is providing additional assistance with food costs to families who lost access to free or reduced-price school meals in response to COVID-19-related school closures

Grant funds seven out-of-school time programs

A total of seven 21st Century Community Learning Center grants have been awarded to provide funding for academic enrichment opportunities for students. Grants range from $50,000 to $250,000 a year and support out-of-school time activities.
