Public comment window open for Perkins V State Plan
South Dakota’s proposed State Plan for the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V) is now open for public comment. Perkins V is the federal law overseeing funding of career and technical education. View the proposed State Plan on the department’s Perkins V webpage. Look for the State Plan Draft for Public Comment link.

SD Week of Work School registration open for South Dakota Week of Work
Schools are now able to register their participating 10th grade students in the South Dakota Week of Work matching system. The South Dakota Week of Work is scheduled for April 20-24. Businesses across the state have been registering to participate over the past several months. To date, 275 businesses have signed up.

Apply Now Apply by Feb. 28 for 2020-21 MTSS cohort
Applications for the 2020-21 cohort for Multi-tiered System of Supports implementation are due Feb. 28. The MTSS initiative provides districts with the training, tools, and support to implement a multi-tiered approach for meeting students’ academic and behavior needs in a proactive and positive way. New Statewide Suicide Prevention Plan released
DOE is a partner agency in creating a statewide suicide prevention plan with an aim to prevent, intervene, and respond to crises related to suicide. The Suicide Prevention Plan, Priority Strategies and Call to Action are posted on the state’s Suicide Prevention website. A top-priority education-related item is providing a model crisis policy. SD School Honored

Canistota and Warner elementary schools honored at national conference
Canistota Elementary and Warner Elementary are among 73 U.S. schools named 2019 National ESEA Distinguished Schools. They were recently honored at the National ESEA Conference in Atlanta, Ga. Congratulations to these outstanding schools!

Student leaders visit Capitol as part of CTE Month celebrations
It’s National Career and Technical Education Month. As part of the celebration, 37 student leaders came to Pierre Feb. 4-5, for the South Dakota Career and Technical Student Organizations’ Legislative Shadow Day. Activities included a social for students, legislators, cabinet members, and state agency staff. Students also attended committee meetings and observed House and Senate floor sessions.

Submit Verification of Educational Structure forms by March 2

Time to report new schools, closed schools, name changes and grade span changes for the 2020-21 school year. On Jan. 31, superintendents and main Infinite Campus/student data contacts should have received an email on this topic, which included the educational structure form. It must be completed by all school districts by March 2, even if there are no changes that need to be made. Questions? Contact Jennifer Rattling Leaf with the Department of Education.

Summer Food Service Program Summer Food Service Program seeking sponsors to serve communities

DOE’s office of Child and Adult Nutrition Services is seeking sponsors for a federally-funded program that provides nutritious meals and snacks to children in low-income areas during the summer months. Schools are among those organizations that can apply to be sponsors.

Gov. Noem appoints Heineman and Westra to Board of Education Standards

Governor Kristi Noem has appointed Phyllis Heineman and Julie Westra, both of Sioux Falls, to the South Dakota Board of Education Standards. Heineman is a former teacher, who served in the state legislature from 1999-2008 and from 2011-2016. Westra served three years on the Sioux Falls School Board and has also served on the South Dakota Professional Administrators Practices and Standards Commission.

Nominate your District Teacher of the Year by March 1

Celebrate great teaching through the South Dakota Teacher of the Year program! Each school district that wishes to participate should submit the name of its District TOY to the South Dakota Department of Education by March 1 for consideration as a Regional TOY. Regional TOYs get to attend the 2020 National Teacher Leadership Conference hosted by the National Network of State Teachers of the Year.

State Historical Society looking for SD’s History Teacher of the Year

Nominations are being accepted until Feb. 24 for the 2020 South Dakota K-12 History Teacher of the Year, one of the Governor's Awards for History coordinated by the South Dakota State Historical Society. The society seeks to pay tribute to a teacher who excels in teaching the history of South Dakota. All elementary and secondary teachers are eligible.

The South Dakota School for the Deaf recently moved to its new location at 4101 W. 38th St., Suite 101, in Sioux Falls. The school offers audiology services, educational evaluations, and a variety of outreach supports and services, including home- and school-based services.

Mentoring Summer Academy presentation proposals due Feb. 28

The Department of Education is seeking proposals for breakout sessions at the 2020 Mentoring Summer Academy. More than 850 new teachers and mentors who are participating in the statewide mentoring program will attend this event scheduled for June 3-4 in Sioux Falls.

Nominate outstanding school counselors by March 6

The South Dakota School Counselor Association is accepting nominations for outstanding school counselors and others making contributions to the school counseling profession. Nominations are due by March 6, and the awards will be presented at the South Dakota School Counselor Association conference in April in Spearfish.

SD ASRO Logo Nominate outstanding school resource officers by March 13

Nominations are being accepted for the School Officer of the Year Award. The South Dakota Association of School Resource Officers supports this annual award, which is now in its 12th year. Nominees should display professionalism, dedication and commitment to their respective school and/or district. Nominations must be postmarked by March 13.
