At its March meeting, the South Dakota Board of Education Standards adopted new academic content standards in the following subject areas: educational technology, physical education, and certain career and technical education areas (Foundational CTE; Architecture and Construction; Education and Training; Information Technology; Law, Public Safety, Security, and Corrections; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
Following standards adoption by the board, school districts have a transition year to make sure that local curriculum and instructional materials align to these state-set expectations for student learning. Schools are expected to teach to the newly approved standards in the 2022-23 school year. The board also approved a change to the Standards Revision and Adoption Timeline: health education standards will be reviewed and have four public hearings in SY 2023-24 and again in SY 2029-30.
