Board of Education Standards to meet twice in October

The South Dakota Board of Education Standards will meet via Zoom on Oct. 18 to hold a public hearing on a proposed administrative rule to update the certification rule to extend the length of time a long-term substitute can act as the teacher of record and provide additional flexibility for leave pursuant to FMLA or when the individual has a teaching certificate. The reason for adopting the proposed rule is to provide more clarity and flexibility for school districts in hiring long-term substitutes.

The governor has announced that the review of the state's social studies standards will be relaunched, and the standards proposed by the Department of Education will be set aside.

The public hearings for the fine arts standards and CTE standards currently up for review (Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources; Arts, A/V Technology, and Communications; Finance; Health Science; Human Services; Manufacturing) will continue as planned at the Board of Education Standards Oct. 25 meeting in Aberdeen. You can view these proposed standards on our Content Standards: Under Review webpage.
