Apply by May 8 to revise unpacked social studies standards

This summer, a workgroup will revise South Dakota’s unpacked social studies standards. The goals of this work are to provide deeper meaning for the current social studies standards and identify potential gaps to support future standards revisions.

The South Dakota Department of Education invites K-12 social studies educators to apply to participate in this work, which supports the department’s Civics Action Plan to promote greater student civic engagement through the state’s social studies standards.

This work will take place virtually June 16-17, July 10, and July 27. In addition, there will be virtual independent team work between June and July. Workgroup members will be compensated for their work.

The amount of time needed to unpack the standards will vary based on the number of standards in each grade level or high school domain. For example, grades K-3 have fewer standards than grades 4-12, therefore, this could lead to fewer days required to complete the work.

The unpacking process requires a lead for each grade level to assist other team members. Grade-level leads will be required to meet virtually on June 15 in addition to the dates listed above. Grade-level lead responsibilities are outlined in the application. If interested in this role, please indicate in the application.

Applications are due May 8.
