TEACHER FEATURE: PAEMST state finalists announced
Four South Dakota teachers have been named the latest state finalists for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This is the highest recognition a K-12 math or science teacher can receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. Congratulations to these terrific educators!

Congratulations to teachers and school counselors earning national certifications

Four South Dakota teachers and three school counselors earned national certifications in 2020, demonstrating advanced knowledge and skill in their professions. We commend these outstanding educators!

SD Week of Work South Dakota Week of Work scheduled for April 19-23

The South Dakota Week of Work will be held April 19-23. All activities will be offered virtually. This special week will introduce 10th and 11th graders to career opportunities in their communities and across the state. It’s a week of exploration and celebration, with the aim of guiding students, engaging businesses, and introducing employers to their future workforce.

Complete survey about social studies content standards by Feb. 5
The South Dakota Department of Education is conducting a survey to gather feedback about the state’s current social studies standards, which will be revised during the summer of 2021. The brief survey consists of short-answer questions about the current social studies standards and potential changes to be made.

Davis-Bahcall Encourage high school seniors to apply for Davis-Bahcall program by Jan. 29

The Davis-Bahcall program is an all-expense paid, summer science program sponsored by the Sanford Underground Research Facility, Black Hills State University, the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium, and First Premier Bank. Davis-Bahcall Scholars will join a group of peers for a two-week, fully supported program in the Black Hills that will allow them to explore the world of modern scientific research.


Perkins Reserve grant applications due Feb. 1

The Perkins secondary reserve grants are now open. Applications may be submitted by public school districts with approved career and technical education programs (or those wishing to add approved CTE programs in the 2021-22 school year). The maximum amount per individual award will be $30,000.

Mentoring Summer Academy presentation proposals due Feb. 28

The Department of Education is seeking proposals for breakout sessions at the 2021 Mentoring Summer Academy. More than 1,000 new teachers and mentors who are participating in the statewide mentoring program will attend this event scheduled for June 2-3 in Sioux Falls.

Spring sessions added to webinar series for K-12 social studies teachers

We continue adding sessions to our 2020-21 webinar series for K-12 social studies teachers. Some webinars feature national experts. CEUs are available. Collaborative chats are also offered to continue the conversation and support learning.

English WIDA ELD Standards Framework, 2020 Edition available

The WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework, 2020 Edition: Kindergarten – Grade 12, is now available, providing a clear and coherent structure to guide the development of curriculum, instruction, and assessment of content-driven language learning. South Dakota adopted the WIDA ELD standards in 2008. Visit the WIDA ELD webpage for more information.

JAG-SD JAG Model features 10 common elements

This article is part of a series about South Dakota’s Jobs for America’s Graduates program. The program was placed in statute by the 2020 Legislature. The legislature also created a special donations fund for the program, and the South Dakota Department of Education is seeking to expand the number of JAG programs across the state.

Food and Mood Town Hall scheduled for Jan. 27

Join SAMHSA and the USDA for a discussion on the link between food access, school wellness policies, farm to school, and school gardens to behavioral health and well-being in the K-12 population. Hear from experts and network with state, tribal, and regional partners to learn how you can support emerging Food and Mood models. Register.
