Some of Austin Bishop's students are currently working toward FAA certification to pilot drones. Bishop sees career and technical education moving toward providing students more and more opportunities to pursue industry certifications.

Student leaders celebrate CTE Month with visit to Capitol

February is National Career and Technical Education Month. As part of the celebration, 34 student leaders came to Pierre Feb. 3, for the South Dakota Career and Technical Student Organizations’ Legislative Shadow Day. Students shadowed legislators at committee meetings and observed House and Senate floor sessions.

Apply now Apply for social studies standards revision workgroup by March 31

South Dakota K-12 educators are invited to apply to participate in this summer’s K-12 social studies content standards review and revision. South Dakota core content standards are reviewed and revised every seven years. Please note that some training will be required to participate in this work.

Resources supporting OSEU instruction to be released weekly
K-12 educators, check out new resources to support instruction of the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings and Standards. Resources will be released weekly, organized by OSEU standard. These resources are housed on the South Dakota Office of Indian Education website.

Apply for 2021 Research Experience for Teachers by Feb. 23

The South Dakota Space Grant Consortium is accepting applications for 2021 Research Experience for Teachers summer fellowships. The program enables high school teachers to enrich their knowledge of science and engineering practices by joining a research group at a South Dakota university or laboratory in summer 2021.

State Historical Society holding essay contest for fourth-graders

The State Historic Preservation Office of the South Dakota State Historical Society in Pierre is holding an essay contest. Prizes will be awarded to the top three essays during Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month, which is celebrated in May.

Webinar series for K-12 social studies teachers continues

Don't miss upcoming sessions on geography and women's history in the 2020-21 webinar series for K-12 social studies teachers. Some webinars feature national experts. CEUs are available. Collaborative chats are also offered to continue the conversation and support learning.

SD State Fair State Fair invites teachers to submit student work by April 16

Teachers are invited to highlight their students’ best work in art, literature, and photography at the 2021 South Dakota State Fair. The work must be from the 2020-21 school year, and entries must be submitted no later than April 16.

The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks is looking for seasonal employees across the state. Most positions run mid-May through Labor Day. If you have students ages 17+ who might enjoy working outdoors this summer, please consider sharing this opportunity.
