Teacher Feature: Brandon Valley’s Bryant named SDCTE Young Leader of the Year

Brandon Valley High School English teacher Maggie Bryant has received the South Dakota Council of Teachers of English Young Leader of the Year Award. Bryant’s principal describes her as a “rising star” in the district.


Application deadline for Social Studies Standards Revision Commission extended

The South Dakota Department of Education has extended the deadline for individuals to apply to be part of the Social Studies Standards Revision Commission. The commission will work with the department to draft new state content standards for K-12 social studies. The new application deadline is Nov. 30, 11:59 p.m. CST. Individuals interested in serving on the commission can use this online form to apply.

State Library recognizes 21st Century School Libraries

The South Dakota State Library recognizes the 2021 recipients of the 21st Century School Library Award. The 21st Century School Library Award recognizes school libraries as Effective, Enhanced, or Exemplary, based on performance in three areas: place (which refers to the learning environment, both physical and online), programming, and the professional.

DOE seeks feedback in setting targets for State Performance Plan

The South Dakota Department of Education Special Education Programs (SEP) is seeking broad stakeholder feedback to assist in setting targets for all students with disabilities receiving special education services in a public school district.

Tools for Teachers is a free resource for all South Dakota public school teachers of grades 3-12, featuring standards-aligned lessons and activities created by educators. This easy-to-use website connects the Smarter Balanced interim assessments to lesson plans so educators can help their students master state content standards. New resources are added regularly, like new social-emotional modules created with the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) recently added to the Professional Learning section. Questions? Career exploration print publications for elementary students available
The South Dakota Department of Education has print versions of the career exploration publications below available to send to schools, free of charge. Email Kim VanDenHemel or call 605-773-3423 to request copies.

ACT and Report Card data released
ACT scores and the 2020-21 Report Card were released in October. South Dakota’s average ACT composite for 2021 was 21.6, compared to the national average of 20.3. The 2020-21 Report Card provides a variety of data for school leaders, policy makers, parents, and the general public. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s data are incomplete.

Special Education Conference call for presentations open until Dec. 6
Presentation proposals are being accepted until Dec. 6 for the 2022 South Dakota Special Education Conference: Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover. The conference is scheduled for March 15-16 in Sioux Falls. Presenters should also be prepared to present virtually in case conditions require a change in conference format.

Outstanding Physical Science Teacher Award Applications for Outstanding Physical Science
Teacher Award due Jan. 5

The South Dakota Science Teachers Association announces the application window for the Outstanding Physical Science Teacher Award, which is sponsored by Neiman Enterprises and Rushmore Forest Products, Inc. and coordinated by the South Dakota State University Physics Department. The awardee receives $1,000 and recognition at the SD STEM Ed Conference in Huron in February.
