Teacher Feature: SD Regional Math Circles connecting teachers

SD Regional Math Circles provide educators opportunities to build their professional network while they engage in rich mathematics tasks and grade-specific tasks, develop their conceptual understanding of mathematics, and discuss equitable learning opportunities for all students. Hear from your colleagues about their experience at the first session, then sign up for January!


  Governor delivers budget address

Gov. Kristi Noem gave her budget address Dec. 7. The governor proposed a 6 percent increase for state aid to general education – to be invested directly into teachers and other district staff. Access slides from the budget address, as well as the recommended budget, on the Bureau of Finance and Management’s website.

 
Cheyenne-Eagle Butte students

Two South Dakota schools design ornaments for National Christmas Tree

Cheyenne-Eagle Butte School and Tri-Valley High School students are among those from 58 schools across the nation and abroad to have designed one-of-a-kind ornaments for the 2021 National Christmas Tree display on the Ellipse in President’s Park. Congratulations to these students!

  Perkins Reserve Grant applications due Feb. 1

The 2022 Perkins Reserve grants are now open. Grants will support three high-need areas: special populations, industrial alignment, and/or innovative delivery. The maximum amount per individual award will be $50,000. Public school districts with approved career and technical education programs (or those wishing to add approved CTE programs in the 2022-23 school year) may apply.

Did you know the Content Explorer gives educators resources for checking learning and planning instruction? When teachers understand grade-level expectations for English language arts and math based on state standards, they can align instruction to state standards more effectively. The South Dakota State Historical Society has launched a podcast, History 605, hosted by State Historian and Society Director Dr. Ben Jones. Through conversations with historians, museum curators, tribal historic preservationists, and other experts, Jones aims to tell the story of South Dakota and the region through the people, places, and events that have shaped us.   K-12 Child & Adult Advocacy Studies (CAASt) webinar scheduled for Dec. 22
The USD Child & Adult Advocacy Studies (CAASt) certificate program and the Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment (CPCM) are offering a free webinar Dec. 22 to support the work of school staff seeking to create trauma-informed school settings. The webinar uses CAASt competencies to provide school personnel with applicable knowledge for working in multidisciplinary teams within the school.

2021 School Libraries Data Digest available
Every year South Dakota public school districts, non-public school systems, tribal/BIE schools, and state special schools are surveyed about their libraries. The 2021 South Dakota School Libraries Data Digest reflects the activities of the districts and systems that responded to the South Dakota School Library Survey.

  Apply for SD Space Grant Consortium grant awards by Jan. 5

South Dakota math and science teachers are encouraged to apply for two grant opportunities available through the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium: the Kelly Lane Earth and Space Science Grant ($10,000 total for two awards) and the Daniel Swets Robotics Materials Award ($13,000 available). Applicants will be notified of selection results by Feb. 1.


  Apply by Dec. 28 for the 2022 Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program

The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program provides U.S. educators in the arts, social sciences, and humanities with opportunities to participate in short-term seminars abroad to improve their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. In 2022, summer seminars will be offered in the Philippines, Hungary, Norway, and Germany.


  Student artists invited to participate in 2022 Aviation Art Competition

The South Dakota Department of Transportation invites students ages 6 to 17 to participate in the 2022 Aviation Art Contest. Entries must be postmarked by Jan. 10, 2022. Winners will receive prizes ranging from professional art sets to drones.


  South Dakota chapter of Computer Science Teachers Association launches

The South Dakota chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA-SD) has launched to support computer science opportunities in South Dakota classrooms. The mission of CSTA-SD is to promote computer science in classrooms, advocate for statewide standards and inclusion of computer science in all South Dakota schools, provide professional development, and create community partnerships.
