Full implementation of new state content standards underway

South Dakota adopted ELA and math content standards in March 2018. The 2018-19 school year was considered a transition year, so that teachers could become familiar with the revisions made to state content standards. Full implementation of new state content standards begins this fall. Check out these upcoming trainings:

2018-19 Report Card released: English-learners, postsecondary readiness are bright spots

The public version of the 2018-19 Report Card is now live. Two bright spots in this year’s data: the number of English learners considered on track to English language mastery grew from 33 percent to 45 percent, and the number of students considered ready for postsecondary based on their course-taking patterns in high school jumped from 64 percent to 68 percent.

SD Week of Work SD Week of Work to engage students in career exploration

Governor Kristi Noem has announced details of the first-ever South Dakota Week of Work, April 20-24, 2020. The purpose is to connect 10th grade students with area businesses to: 1) provide students with opportunities to explore potential jobs here in South Dakota, and 2) provide employers with opportunities to engage with youth and develop connections with the state’s future workforce.

Still needed: Special education teachers to help with review of SD Science Alt Assessment

Special education teachers are encouraged to apply by Sept. 27 to help with content and bias review for the South Dakota Science Alternate Assessment. Educators will work with content specialists from AIR to review assessment items to ensure accuracy, grade-level appropriateness, alignment to South Dakota’s science standards, and potential bias and sensitivity concerns.

Perkins V planning: Draft framework available

DOE’s Perkins draft framework is now online, along with an infographic highlighting the framework’s five tenets. We continue to gather feedback and will begin writing the state’s plan later this fall. Send input via your regional specialist or doecte@state.sd.us. This work is to plan for South Dakota’s implementation of the federal career and technical education law, Perkins V. Find more information on our Perkins V webpage.

Attend Community Response to Child Abuse Conference for free

DOE is able to cover registration fees for a limited number of educators from all South Dakota public school districts to attend the 19th annual Community Response to Child Abuse Conference, Oct. 3-4, at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. Districts may send staff based on their district enrollment numbers.

NASA @ My Library NASA@ My Library kits available for checkout from State Library

The South Dakota State Library is part of NASA@ My Library, a nationwide science-technology initiative by the STAR Library Network. This STEM education initiative is intended to increase and enhance STEM learning opportunities. NASA@ My Library kits are available for checkout. School libraries may participate by coordinating with their local public library in offering events open to the general public.

SD Capitol Encourage students to be pages during 2020 legislative session

The South Dakota Legislature is accepting applications from high school students interested in serving as pages during the 2020 legislative session. Students must be juniors or seniors (seniors are given preference), must be sponsored by a legislator and be in good academic standing (3.0 GPA or higher is encouraged).

Emergency Guidelines for Schools-2019 document available

Emergency Guidelines for Schools-2019 is a comprehensive, easy-to-use guide for managing a variety of medical emergencies involving children, distributed by South Dakota Emergency Medical Services for Children. It is meant to serve as a basic guide for staff with little to no medical/nursing training.
