State Library recognizes highly effective school libraries with new statewide award

New approved youth suicide prevention training
In May, the Board of Education Standards approved CALM Conversations on Access to Lethal Means as a youth suicide awareness and prevention training under the requirement per SDCL 13-42-71. As a reminder, verification of training completion is conducted through accreditation reviews in lieu of educator certification.

Grants to support student-teachers now available
Per HB 1092 passed during the 2025 legislative session, the Department of Education will receive an appropriation to provide grants to schools for the purpose of financially supporting their student-teachers. Public school districts and other state-accredited schools are eligible to apply. Grants may not exceed $5,000 per school district or accredited school. To be eligible to receive funds, a student-teacher must hold either a Student Teacher Permit or an Advanced Student Teacher Permit.
