Certification: Proposed Rule Changes

Beginning in 2014, the South Dakota Department of Education began working with the Commission on Teaching and Learning to examine the state’s educator certification system. Teachers, administrators and higher education representatives from across South Dakota serve on the commission. The department has also met with a number of other education stakeholder groups, including an administrator work group that developed revised rules for administrators.



Timeline for proposed rule changes

Nov. 15, 2016 Jan. 19, 2017 – Pierre March 20, 2017 – Aberdeen July 1, 2017
  • If the state Board of Education adopts, and the Legislature’s Rules Review Committee approves, proposed certification rule changes, rule changes that DO NOT impose increased requirements on educators go into effect.
July 1, 2019
