**Counselors must obtain the NCSC specialty certificate under NCC to qualify for DOE reimbursement**
National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. and Affiliates (NBCC) is a not-for-profit, independent certification organization established in 1982. NBCC’s original and primary purposes are to establish and monitor a national certification system, to identify those counselors who have voluntarily sought and obtained certification, and to maintain a register of those counselors. As NBCC has grown, it and its divisions and affiliates have taken on additional responsibilities to advance the counseling profession and enhance mental health worldwide.
South Dakota Department of Education Fee Reimbursement and Stipend program
Gov. Dennis Daugaard and the 2016 Legislature approved a K-12 education package that reinstated the stipends for South Dakota public school teachers and counselors who seek National Board Certification. Retroactive reimbursement payments for years 1-5 of certification will be paid in calendar year 2016. Retroactive reimbursement payments for years 6-10 of certification will be paid in calendar year 2017.
