Race and Ethnicity Reporting

In accordance with new standards issued by the U.S. Department of Education, schools across the nation will need to change how they collect and report race and ethnicity for students and staff. The change will bring education data reporting into line with reporting to the U.S. Census and the rest of the federal government. This change is not optional for states. The South Dakota Department of Education (DOE) is required to submit all of our federal reports beginning with the 2010-2011 school year utilizing the new race/ethnicity categories. The new standards separate race and ethnicity. They include two categories for ethnicity and five categories for race.

There are several helpful resources available to school districts as they work toward implementing this change.
