Free conference: Helping your child succeed at school

Parents who want to be more involved in their child’s education can attend a free conference Aug. 15-16 at the Downtown Holiday Inn in Sioux Falls. The workshop’s theme is “Partnerships with Families Create Success: Make This the Best School Year Ever!”

“Parent involvement is critical to children’s success at school, so we’re excited to be building partnerships with this key group,” said Secretary of Education Rick Melmer. According to Melmer, the conference is designed to provide parents with information and resources that are relevant and useful as their children pursue a K-12 education.

Karen Mapp, author of “Beyond the Bake Sale: The Essential Guide to Family-School Partnerships,” will kick off the event Friday night. Mapp is a lecturer on education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Melmer will address the group Saturday morning. Breakout sessions will cover topics such as: creating a positive learning environment at home, helping children with math homework, becoming a partner with your child’s teacher, addressing Internet safety issues, and learning about teens and the risks they take.

The conference is sponsored by the South Dakota Department of Education and the South Dakota Parent Information and Resource Center. Registration is limited.
