BACKGROUND
Per Senate Bill 24, passed during the 2010 legislative session, the South Dakota Board of Education was charged with developing standards for teaching in South Dakota. A work group appointed by the Secretary of Education began meeting during the summer of 2010. The bill requires that standards be in place by July 1, 2011. The standards are expected to provide a clear, consistent and high quality set of measurements that can be used statewide.
On March 21, 2011, the South Dakota Board of Education voted to adopt Danielson's "Framework for Teaching" as the state's standards.
The next task for the work group will be to create a model evaluation tool.
