South Dakota Historical Society 2024 History Conference
The South Dakota Historical Society 2024 History Conference will be held April 5-6 in Pierre. The conference, titled, “Embracing the New Millenium: 25 Years since Y2K,” will tell the story of how technology has shaped the way we tell the story of South Dakota’s history.
The conference includes a keynote address by Jason Steinhauer, author of History, Disrupted: How Social Media & the World Wide Web Have Changed the Past. Attendees will attend sessions that address topics such as exploring history though photography and Minutemen Missiles in South Dakota.
Teachers who attend the conference can obtain up to one renewal credit or 15 CECHs. Contact the Historical Society at (605)773-3458 for more information.

Youth Suicide: Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention
- May 30, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. CT, online
This virtual workshop will provide extensive information on the roles of schools in youth suicide prevention and implementation and intervention plans that support suicidal and/or grieving students. The event will feature Dr. Scott Poland, an internationally recognized expert on school crisis and youth suicide. Dr. Poland will discuss the prevention lessons learned from certain legal cases.
This workshop is geared for school and district administrators, school counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers. Three CECHs are offered for full attendance at the live workshop. For questions, contact Andrea Effling.

Andrea Junker
In honor of School Counseling Week, this issue’s Teacher Feature puts a spotlight on Andrea Junker, of Harrisburg South Middle School. Andrea, who has been a school counselor for 13 years, is the South Dakota School Counselor of the Year.
