Foundation for Learning and Lifelong Healthy Choices
Child Nutrition Programs are a collection of federal programs designed to defray the costs of providing food to students in various settings and/or at various points throughout the day. Eligible meals must meet high nutritional standards and be balanced across all food groups. These programs are about feeding all students AND building a foundation for learning and lifelong healthy choices.
- Schools participating in the School Nutrition Programs provide nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free breakfasts and lunches for children during the school day. Schools receive cash reimbursement and domestic commodity foods.
- Agencies participating in CACFP operate child day care centers, family and group day care homes, and adult day care centers. These meals support the health and development of younger children and those in after-school situations.
- The Summer Food Service Program provides meals to children in low-income areas when school is not in session. Throughout South Dakota, sponsors such as schools, private non-profit organizations, and government entities participate in providing meals during school vacations.
