How School Librarians Make a Lasting Impact for All

School Libraries: The Professonals. South Dakota Librarians instruct, collobrate, communicate.

There are three main components to the role of a school librarian: instruct, collaborate, and communicate. School librarians are educators, mentors, collaborators, and leaders. They curate resources, provide guidance, and support student and staff development.

83% of school librarians in South Dakota co-teach with classroom teachers to deliver library programming directly tied to the curriculum. Together, school librarians and teachers enhance educational outcomes through integrated support and shared expertise.

Did you know? The SDSL Library Development group connects libraries with collections, services, consultations, and resources to strengthen library service throughout the state, encourages lifelong learning for South Dakotans through library resources, and assists individual libraries to enhance library service in their communities. Seven staff members work with libraries throughout the state in providing resource sharing opportunities, data collection, summer reading program planning, training, electronic resources, consultations for public and school libraries, and research assistance.

The Library Development group strengthens South Dakota libraries and their staff so they can provide the highest level of service to their communities and schools.
