Local libraries promote literacy through summer reading
Libraries throughout South Dakota are preparing for summer by developing summer reading programming for kids. These programs, led by individual libraries and supported by the South Dakota State Library (SDSL), provide enrichment to students while school is not in session.
Brenda Hemmelman, access and development services manager with the SDSL, said the program’s theme, Color Our World, celebrates the many ways that art and creativity enrich lives. “This year, we’ll be reading books and celebrating art and creativity through activities that spark inspiration in students of all ages,” said Hemmelman. “These programs are designed to allow kids to explore books that open new worlds to them.”
The State Library asks that teachers and schools encourage students to take part in the summer reading programs at their local library. “Participating in summer reading programs at the library is a great way to prevent the ‘summer slide’,” Hemmelman said.
