America’s 250th launches another round of America’s Field Trip contest

On July 4, 1776, American revolutionaries challenged the British government with the Declaration of Independence. Although it took a little more to convince the British of the seriousness of the document and mission of the revolutionaries, that date marks America’s birth date.

The country is now approaching its 250th birthday. In recognition of that occasion, the South Dakota State Historical Society (SDSHS) is partnering with America 250 to sponsor a series of events to mark the year. One of those events is another round of America’s Field Trip, which will launch the second iteration of the contest on Monday, Sept. 16. Students in grades 3-12 are invited to submit an essay, video, or artwork that answers the question, “What does America mean to you?”

Students with winning submissions will earn a free trip to select American historical or cultural sites. Teachers associated with the top scoring student submission in each grade level category will receive a $1,000 cash award. Beginning Sept. 16, you can learn more about the contest on the America’s Field Trip webpage.
