Are you passionate about civics and government? Do you find excitement in the political process? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Department of Education (DOE) has an event for you! The DOE is hosting a two-day professional development opportunity for middle and high school government teachers. Called "Capital Connections: A Legislative Experience for Social Studies Educators," this event will take place Feb. 3-4, 2025, in Pierre, during the heart of the state's legislative session.

Attendees will have opportunities to see state government in action, learn about how state and local government works, and better understand how elected and appointed officials represent the voices of South Dakotans.

These experiences will enhance educators' civic knowledge and equip them with real-world examples of government in action, which teachers can bring back to the classroom.

Registration is now open.

Registration includes:

  • $300 stipend to full event participants who are directly responsible for creating curriculum around, and implementation of, the South Dakota social studies standards;
  • Complimentary lodging and meals; and
  • Participants may earn up to 15 continuing education contact hours.
