South Dakota Farm to School Program

Trainings/Meetings

As South Dakota continues to build and solidify its statewide program, informational and training opportunities for potential partners will be available.

Buyer Grower Conference -This event will be held in two locations, one on each side of the state. The conference is intended to bring together school nutrition professionals, producers, and ranchers to learn, share, and collaborate on ways to incorporate Farm to School in their local communities.

The agenda will include specialized sessions tailored to buyers, focusing on procurement strategies and supply chain management. Growers will receive education on sustainable practices and partnerships for providing fresh, local foods to schools.

Keynote Speaker:

Gary Fehr has been selling to schools for nearly 10 years. A former software/AI engineer, he left the tech world to follow his passion for healthy food. In 2015 he started Green School Farms, a small regenerative vegetable and herb farm near Lincoln, Nebraska. Values guiding this venture focus on healthy food in schools and healthy eating habits in students that provide lifelong benefits.

Currently Gary is a farm to school consultant and coach for numerous organizations at local, state, and national levels. Helping to connect farms with schools, he consults for the Nebraska Dept. of Education, the non-profit Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln, and the national Association of State Public Health Nutritionists. He also sits on several committees as an advocate for farm to school.
