Summer 2025 Foundational Reading Courses

This summer, educators in all roles (paras, teachers, specialists, administrators) will have opportunities to study best practices for teaching reading and writing. Steeped in the principles of the Science of Reading, these in-person foundational courses will cover topics such as the five essential literacy skills, strategies for teaching students with reading challenges, explicit instruction, and more!

K-3 Foundational Reading
May 27-29, Madison
June 9-11, Sioux Falls

Audience: K-3 educators, reading specialists, instructional coaches, para-educators, special education staff, Title I teachers, and elementary administrators

Days 1 and 2: Explore the five essential literacy skills through research-based insights and practical lesson models that can be implemented throughout the school year. Sessions will feature valuable input from reading experts. Day 3: Dive into Orton Gillingham strategies, focusing on phonological awareness, phonics, and reading support techniques. These strategies are designed to assist all students, including those with reading challenges like dyslexia.

Grades 4-8 Foundational Reading

Audience: Grade 4-8 educators, reading specialists, instructional coaches, para-educators, special education staff, Title I teachers, and administrators

Day 1: Gain an overview of the Big 5 Literacy Skills with a focus on fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension—key components for supporting upper elementary and middle school students, especially those who struggle with reading. Participants will also learn how to use formative reading assessments to identify and address skill gaps. Day 2: Develop critical thinking and writing skills that enhance fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension, which are essential for student success at higher levels. This day includes specific instruction on teaching syllabication, working with multi-syllabic words, and meeting the needs of advanced readers. Additionally, participants will learn effective strategies for teaching academic language.

The training integrates reading, critical thinking, and writing skills, providing comprehensive strategies to support upper-level reading success.

Foundational Reading Train-the-Trainer Workshop

Audience: Literacy coaches, ESA consultants, independent education consultants, and district personnel (including teacher leaders, literacy teams, or administrators) who provide foundational reading professional development to teaching staff. Participants should have a strong background in foundational reading.

This five-day training, divided into two parts, aims to offer comprehensive training that aligns with current DOE literacy initiatives focused on foundational reading and the science of reading research. Attendees will receive facilitation and training tools that support the SD DOE literacy initiatives, incorporating evidence-based practices for teaching foundational reading skills, including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

Explicit Instruction Workshop
July 21-22, Sioux Falls
July 23-24, Spearfish

Audience: K-12 educators, general education and special education teachers, all content area teachers, administrators, and curriculum directors

This two-day, in-person workshop emphasizes active learning through sample lessons, discussions, and a focus on explicit instruction techniques, as outlined in Anita Archer and Charles Hughes' book. The instructors for this workshop have been trained directly by Anita Archer herself.
