The school environment is safe and conducive to learning.

A growing body of research points to the importance of an environment conducive to learning in impacting positive student development and academic outcomes. Such an environment goes well beyond physical safety and includes elements such as strong relationships and a connectedness to school. Click here for a summary of recent research.


  • The Department of Education works with schools to implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, or PBIS. PBIS is comprised of a broad range of system, school-wide, group and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior with all students.

  • The department provides regular training to schools around civil rights issues, including bullying and harassment, and has also compiled resources and developed a process for educators to obtain suicide awareness training.
