Take time for mental health this month
In schools in South Dakota, May is a time for tying up loose ends, making plans for summer, and reflecting on the school year. The end of a school year can be an exciting and overwhelming time for both students and educators. With that in mind, May is a good time to consider mental health.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month – a time to talk with students about the importance of taking steps to maintain healthy habits that build resiliency and to provide them with the tools they need to navigate rough waters.
"The more we talk about mental health, the more it becomes second nature for kids to check in on themselves and each other,” said Rebecca Cain, an administrator with the Office of Student Wellness and Support at the Department of Education (DOE). “We want to give them the tools they need to address issues before they come up and, if it becomes a bigger issue, to let them know where to go to get help.”
The DOE offers a collection of resources and information related to mental health that may be useful to educators in a variety of situations. You can find them at doe.sd.gov/mentalhealth.
Cain provided several tips for teachers to try during Mental Health Awareness Month:
- Talk about mental health: Talking with students and coworkers about the importance of mental health will benefit others as well as yourself.
- Get outside! If the weather permits, spending time outside can help staff and students take in some sunshine and get a little exercise.
- Check in on sleeping habits: Talk to students about the importance of getting a good night’s sleep, and make sure you’re taking your own advice.
- Set aside time for journaling: Designate time in class for students to write down their thoughts. Give writing prompts if needed to help get them started, and use the time to do some journaling of your own.
- Eat well and stay hydrated: Our bodies need fuel to power our brains. Teach and model for students how easy it can be to eat healthy foods as well as drink more water throughout the day.
