Bringing Language into Focus: Expectations, Functions, and Features
Feb. 28 and March 13 Online
This workshop, designed for K-12 educators who work with English learners, focuses on intentional language instruction in the classroom using the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework (2020 edition).
The WIDA framework cites four key language uses: to narrate, inform, explain, and argue. Educators who participate in the workshop will take a closer look at the key language uses by exploring language features, functions, and expectations. Participants will learn how mentor texts can make language visible to students. Educational materials and other resources will be available for educators to explore to support their classroom implementation.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify language features, functions, and expectations.
- Connect the linguistic resources students bring to this learning context.
- Leverage language functions and features with students in instructional practice.
Two live webinars, not to exceed 90 minutes each, are scheduled 2-3 weeks apart. Webinars will not be recorded.
Alternate tasks will be available for participants who are not able to attend the webinars.
Webinars will be held Feb. 28 and March 13, 2024, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. (CT). Enrollment is now open.

Youth Suicide: Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention for Schools
May 30 Online
As schools play a key role in youth suicide prevention, this workshop will provide extensive information on the importance of youth suicide prevention plans in supporting suicidal and/or grieving students. Presenter Dr. Scott Poland, an internationally recognized expert on school crisis and youth suicide, has also served as an expert witness in numerous legal cases where schools were sued after a student suicide. He will use his experience and expertise to discuss the prevention lessons from those cases.
This workshop is designed for school and district administrators, school psychologists, school counselors, and school social workers. The workshop will be recorded; continuing education contact hours are offered for full attendance at the live workshop. For questions, contact Andrea Effling. View more information and registration.
