Requirements
SDCL 13-1-48 requires completion of a three-credit-hour course in South Dakota Indian Studies.
SD Indian Studies Course Strands
- Language and Cultural Awareness:
- Establish a fundamental awareness of cultural dynamics such as race and gender bias, stereotyping, assumptions, etc.
- Examine the culture of Lakota/Dakota people, their world view, values, kinship system, oral tradition, health, economy and environment.
- History:
- Survey the history of Indian/White encounters and that of South Dakota from early contact to the present.
- Study U.S. federal Indian policy, land and trade conflicts, treaty and legislative history.
- Cover contemporary legal and political issues such as sovereignty and jurisdiction on and off the reservation.
- Educational Theory and Background of the Traditional Education:
- Inquire into traditional tribal education.
- Summarize the history of church, federal, public and tribal education of Indian leaders.
- Explore legislative issues regarding Indian education such as Title V or Title VII.
- Implementation and Strategies of Indian Learning Styles, Curriculum Development and Authentic Assessment:
- Examine school and community relations.
- Analyze questions of Indian learning and teaching styles.
- Conceptualize and encourage integrated curriculum development.
- Evaluate authentic assessment.
