CTE: Teacher Certification

Option A -
CTE DEGREE Program    (download pdf)
 Have a bachelor's degree or higher from a CTE related educator preparation program
Degree Programs may include: Business Education, FCS Education, AgEd, Educational Technology, and Industrial Technology
 
 Educator would have completed an educator preparation program from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and would have received a written recommendation to obtain teacher license. 
 Educator would participate in the CTE 101 Workshop for CECH credits during the first 1-2 years of teaching 
 Result: Professional or Advanced Teacher Certificate with CTE Career Cluster Endorsement 


Option B -
Other Education Degree Program    (download pdf)
 Have a bachelor's degree or higher from a non-CTE related educator preparation program
Degree Programs may include: Math, Science, or Elementary Education, etc.
 
 Educator would have completed an educator preparation program from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and would have received a written recommendation to obtain teacher license. 
 Educator must take CTE Methods for two credits to add CTE endorsements 
 Educator must pass the State Designated Pedagogy Test - the PLT 7-12 PRAXIS 5624 or PLT PK-12 PRAXIS 5625 
 
CTE Career Cluster Endorsement Option
Fifteen to Eighteen Cluster Specific
Postsecondary Credits within the last ten years
or
A Content Specific State Designated Test
CTE Career Pathway Endorsement Option
Nine Pathway Specific Postsecondary Credits within the last ten years
or
A Content Specific State Designated Test(s)
or
Four thousand hours of validated work experience in content area
or
A Content Specific Industry Certification
 
 Result: Professional or Advanced Teacher Certificate with CTE Career Cluster Endorsement Result: Professional or Advanced Teacher Certificate with CTE Career Pathway Endorsement Endorsement 


Option C -
Postsecondary - Non Education Degree    (download pdf)
 Have a bachelor's degree or higher in a non-education degree program
Degree Programs may include: Agronomy, Nursing, Engineering, Graphic Arts, etc.
 
 **Candidate must have an offer of employment with a school district or department accredited school 
 Educator will complete twelve credits in education related coursework: 
  Three credits of Adolescent Psychology Three credits of South Dakota Indian Studies  
 CTE Methods and Mentored Internship - These courses address the topics of classroom management, student assessment and differentiated instruction. The combo must equal six credits 
 Educator must pass the State Designated Pedagogy Test - the PLT 7-12 PRAXIS 5624 or PLT PK-12 PRAXIS 5625 
 And one of the following: 
 
Fifteen to Eighteen Cluster Specific
Postsecondary Credits within the last ten years
or
A Content Specific State Designated Test(s)
or
A Content Specific Industry Certification
 
 Result: Professional or Advanced Teacher Certificate with CTE Career Cluster Endorsement 


Option D -
Non Education Degree; Have work experience;
National Certification in CTE Field

 Have a minimum of high school diploma or its equivalent or higher in a non-education degree program and one of the following:
1. An associate of applied science degree or higher in a related CTE field
2. Four thousand hours of valid work experience in a related CTE Field earned within the previous five calendar years
3. Hold a national certification in a related CTE field
 
 Examples include: work experience in welding and/or precision machining; as a childcare provider; chef or culinary director, mechanic, etc. . 
 **Candidate must have an offer of employment with a school district or department accredited school 
 Educator will complete nine credits in education related coursework:
  • Three credits of South Dakota Indian Studies
  • Two credits of CTE Methods
  • Four credits of Mentored Internship
And one of the following:
 
 
Nine Pathway Specific Postsecondary Credits within the last ten years
or
A Content Specific State Designated Test(s)
or
Four thousand hours of validated work experience within the previous five calendar years in content area
or
A Content Specific Industry Certification
 
 Result: CTE Instructor Educator Permit with a CTE Career Pathway Endorsement
