Certification Requirements

Reciprocity Options in South Dakota

  • Endorsements

    To be fully certified in South Dakota, you must hold endorsements in the content and subject area in which you are employed in a SD public or department-accredited school. To be considered for an endorsement, you must request the specific endorsement(s) on your application and submit all supporting documents that meet South Dakota's requirements. Requirements for adding endorsements can be found on the Endorsement Search on Educator 411; requirements may vary based on your certificate type and preparation including:

    • Passing the approved state-designated content and/or pedagogy test;
    • Reciprocity with a valid certificate from another state or U.S. territory;
    • Completion of state-designated coursework completed within the 10-year period prior to the application; or
    • 4,000 hours of validated work experience in a related CTE field within the previous five years.

    Requirements based on preparation are outline in ARSD 24:28:09 and ARSD 24:28:19 through 24:28:27.

    • ARSD 24:28:16:08 Requirements to add new endorsements. If the applicant for reciprocal certification seeks new endorsements not included on the out-of-state certificate, the applicant shall meet requirements of §§ 24:28:19 through 24:28:27 to add the endorsement.
